Lamination technology that enables high electric power density without compromising power generation efficiency

Fuel cells are attracting attention as an environmentally friendly energy, and various forms are being researched and developed. Solid oxide fuel cells are focused from the energy efficiency perspective.  For a solid oxide fuel cell containing multi-cells, fuel and air are supplied separately from the same direction to the anode and cathode of each cell, which requires a fuel and an air supply unit, respectively. In addition, since the solid oxide fuel cells have a structure in which a solid electrolyte is sandwiched between an anode and a cathode, the fuel and air supply system becomes complicated in order to supply them separately to the anode and cathode which are close to each other. This is the reason why the full cell miniaturization was difficult.  This invention is based on the structure of the electrode layer. By separating the fuel and air input & output respectively, a smooth flow can be achieved and the power generation efficiency can be improved.

The cell structure, similar to PEM water electrolysis, features a membrane electrode assembly structure that offers excellent characteristics such as fast response, a wide operating range, and the ability to tolerate intermittent operation. 2. **Low Cost Achieved Without Precious Metals** AEM water electrolysis operates in a weak alkaline environment using hydroxide ions as carriers, eliminating the need for precious metals and thus achieving low costs. Additionally, the amount of water expelled from the cathode is minimal, and there is no need for electrolyte circulation, which simplifies the system. 3. **Modular Design Allows for Continuous Operation Even if One Unit Fails** One AEM stack can generate 0.5 Nm³ of hydrogen per hour with 2.4 kW of power, and multiple stacks can be stacked to achieve MW-class hydrogen production (210 Nm³ per hour and above). Furthermore, due to the modular design, if a malfunction occurs in one stack, only that specific stack needs to be repaired or replaced. This results in less maintenance effort compared to large hydrogen production systems.

"Raman spectroscopy" is an effective evaluation method for carbon materials as it sensitively reflects their structure. It is an analytical technique that utilizes Raman scattered light emitted from a substance when laser light is irradiated onto it. The Raman scattered light appears shifted by a specific frequency based on the vibrations and rotations of the molecules that make up the substance. The degree of this shift is used to perform molecular structure analysis. DLC, fullerenes, graphite, carbon nanotubes, and diamonds are well-known carbon materials. The Raman spectrum shows the G band (1580 cm-1) that commonly appears in graphite and the D band (1360 cm-1) that is attributed to disorder and defects in the graphite structure. The peak intensity ratio of the D band to the G band (R value: ID/IG) and the full width at half maximum can be used to evaluate the crystallinity and quality of various carbon materials.
